It’s important to keep in mind that blogging is very much a social occupation. You cannot expect to build a fan base if you don’t interact and communicate with the people reading your blog. At the end of your blog posts (or somewhere within them) you should always invite your readers to leave a comment. This lets them know that you value their opinions and welcome their feedback. In turn you will learn how to improve and perhaps what to write about in the future.
If someone does, in fact, take time out of their day to read your writing and leave a comment, you should never ignore it! Respond to their thoughts, thank them for visiting your site and build a relationship with them. This lets your readers know that you appreciate their support. Even if your writing is being criticised, moderating and approving your comments is a simple act of courtesy. As well as replying to comments, you should try to visit your followers’ blogs which will help you learn of their interests and what they want from your writing. If you make an appearance on someone else’s blog, you are spreading awareness of your own blog as people might want to read more of what you have to say.
As well as learning about your readers, interacting with them also keeps you on their radar. If they leave a comment and you ignore it, they’re likely to forget about you and the voice you hope to share. But, if you respond they will return to your blog and continue to engage with you.
Hope this has been of some help.
